If you’re driving with dirty oil, or without enough oil, you risk doing serious damage to your car. Even with regular maintenance and oil changes you should know how to check car oil and do so once a month. Learn how with Oviedo Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram FIAT.

Learn How to Check the Oil Level in Your Car

Knowing how to check the oil level in your car can save you a lot of money and time in Smithville. It’s a quick and easy preventative maintenance task that can keep you out of the service department. Some newer cars have electronic oil monitors that don’t use traditional dipsticks. Check your owner’s manual to see if that’s the case with your car. If not, this is how to check the oil on your car:

  1. Park your car in a level spot, turn off the engine, and let it cool down.
  2. Open the vehicle’s hood and find the dipstick. The owner’s manual can tell you where it is.
  3. Pull the dipstick out of the engine and wipe any oil from the end of it.
  4. Rub a little oil from the dipstick between your thumb and finger, and inspect it. It should feel smooth, and you shouldn’t see any debris. If you see small bits of metal, schedule an appointment as soon as possible. It could be a sign that part of your engine is breaking down.
  5. Re-insert the dipstick all the way back into its tube, then pull it out and look at both sides to see where the level is.

Why You Should Learn How to Check Car Oil

It’s easy to take your car’s oil for granted, especially since most new cars can go up to six months between oil changes. However, if your oil is dirty or if there’s an oil leak, you need to know as soon as possible. When you know how to check car oil and do so monthly, you’re more likely to catch problems before they turn into major repairs. Also keep an eye out for oil under your car, which could be an oil leak. If your car hood is hot to the touch or steam is billowing out of it, that’s a sign that you have an oil leak.
